GreenScape: A Theoretical Framework for Shaping the Educational Escape Room Experience
Work Package 2 is the cornerstone of the GreenScape project. Its primary aim is to establish a strong theoretical and methodological foundation for designing the Virtual Escape Room , synthesizing principles from game-based learning , sustainability education , and immersive pedagogy to guide all subsequent development phases.
To build this foundation, national brainstorming sessions were organized in each participating country, bringing together young people , educators , youth workers , and stakeholders to gather diverse perspectives on sustainability, civic engagement, and learning preferences. The insights collected were then consolidated into a transnational report providing a comparative overview of youth expectations, local environmental concerns, and preferred educational methods – ensuring the Virtual Escape Room reflects the real needs and aspirations of European youth .
Alongside this, an in-depth literature review was conducted, drawing from academic studies , policy documents , and best practices across Europe. The resulting report offers evidence-based recommendations and identifies gaps in current methodologies, forming a key reference for GreenScape’s educational approach.
These efforts culminate in a comprehensive theoretical framework that defines the learning objectives, target competencies, narrative structure, and assessment strategies of the Virtual Escape Room – serving as a blueprint to ensure the experience is engaging, inclusive, and aligned with the European Youth Goals and climate justice themes.
