Košice, Slovakia (11 December 2024) – The twelfth annual National Conference on Cycling Transport, held on 9-10 December in Košice at Tabačka Kulturfabrik, successfully concluded, bringing together experts and stakeholders to address the critical issue of improving cycling infrastructure across Slovakia. The conference, themed “Will Cycle Paths Also Come to Eastern Slovakia?”, was organised by OZ MULICA, HUBa o.z., Žilinská univerzita v Žiline, OZ Kostitras, and Cyklistika pre všetkých, with support from partners including Jantárová cesta, s.r.o., Studio 21, ARRIVA SLOVAKIA, IoMobility, and EIT Urban Mobility.
The two-day event featured presentations and discussions focused on key aspects of cycling infrastructure development, including:
- High-quality and safe cycling infrastructure: Experts explored innovative solutions for creating safe and attractive cycling environments in urban and rural areas.
- Legislation, norms, and standards: The conference addressed the importance of robust legal frameworks and standards to guide cycling infrastructure development.
- Safety of cyclists and cyclist behaviour: Discussions focused on improving cyclist safety and promoting responsible cycling practices.
- Data acquisition and utilisation: Participants explored the use of data to inform decision-making in support of cycling initiatives.
- Campaigns supporting sustainable mobility: The conference highlighted successful campaigns promoting sustainable transport options.
- Cyclotourism and economic contributions: Speakers emphasised the economic benefits of cycling tourism and its contribution to local economies.
A key highlight of the conference was a panel discussion on effective communication strategies for proposed cycling initiatives. The conference also included presentations from prominent international and domestic experts, sharing best practices and inspiring further advancements in the field. Notably, Michal Tobiáš from EIT Urban Mobility provided valuable insights into leveraging EIT funds to support sustainable mobility projects.
The conference attracted a diverse range of attendees, including representatives from local and regional governments, state institutions, traffic engineers, urban planners, architects, and the non-governmental sector. The event concluded with a strong commitment to continued collaboration and advocacy for improved cycling infrastructure in Slovakia.
